Day 7

Subject: [firstname]: Keep it natural!

Hey [firstname]!

You can buy fruits and vegetables all over the place – from convenience stores to farmers' markets and roadside stands, but most of us buy or fruits and veggies from the grocery store or supermarket. Nothing wrong with that. You should however, check carefully to see where that fresh-looking produce has come from. Despite national polls indicating that more than 90 percent of Americans favor GMO food labeling, and recent rulings by the USDA regarding certain bioengineered crops, it's still hard to tell what foods are GMO and what aren't.

There are lots of arguments for and against GMO produce, and I'm not going to get into them here, except to say that GMO has not been around long enough to tell what the long-term effects are, and whether it lives up to the hype or down to all the negativity. If you want to be a “lab-rat”, that's fine with me.

Even if your fruit and vegetables are not GMO, you never know what pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and other artificial techniques have been used in their production.

Realistically, the best way to ensure you're getting all the nutrients you need from your food is to go organic. Sure, it's more expensive, but if you look for the USDA Organic label, you can be sure that you're getting fruits and vegetables produced according to USDA organic regulations, which define standards that “integrate cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity.” To which I would add: And taste better too!

In this short e-course, I've only been able to scratch the surface of this fascinating subject. There's a whole bunch of stuff I just haven't had time to tell you about – different types of vitamins, and great stuff you can do with elderberry for instance. I go into much more detail in my guide to the miraculous power of fruits and vegetables. I've still got a few copies left, but they're going fast. To your healthier future!
